Discovering the fascinating world of Favignana's underground quarries
For decades, man has extracted an extraordinary stone from the belly of Favignana: Calcarenite. Highly prized and in demand throughout the world, improperly called 'tuff'. Its extraction together with the related production of 'cantuna' (parallelepiped tuff ashlars) have been one of Favignana's oldest and most peculiar activities. Over the years, the island has been 'excavated' extensively and intensively, resulting in the creation of veritable underground cathedrals. The work of the 'pirriature' (quarrymen) was laborious and artisanal, relying on a few essential tools (at least until the 1950s).
As time went by, the Favignanesi quarries began to go into crisis due to a variety of factors. Many were abandoned. Some, on the other hand, have been 'regenerated', giving rise in many cases to beautiful underground gardens.
The Hypogean Cathedral - Favignana's quarry museum - is also the result of redevelopment and regeneration. Thanks to the intuition of a group of enthusiasts, an old quarry that had been disused for years was completely reclaimed and made usable. The visit route has also been enriched and made even more interesting thanks to some 'bonuses', such as a beautiful immersive video and an 'aquarium' area dedicated to the island's marine life.
